The trial in New York will start on 15 April, in a blow to the former president's hopes to push any decision to after the election
Justice Merchan rejected the defence’s arguments to delay the case, and has kept the trial date on Monday 15 April. It all but ensures that Mr Trump will become the first former US president to face a criminal trial and paves the way for the Republican presidential candidate to either be convicted or cleared before the election in November.
The documents came from the US attorney’s office in Manhattan, which previously investigated Mr Cohen, Mr Trump’s former lawyer and fixer, who arranged the $130,000 hush money payment to adult film actress Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election. He is expected to be a key witness against Mr Trump. Mr Colangelo said the number of relevant, usable, new documents “is quite small”, but Mr Trump’s lawyer, Todd Blanche, countered “we very much disagree”.
Ahead of the hearing, Mr Trump said the case should be dismissed. “No crime,” he wrote on his Truth Social platform.
