A judge has cautioned both Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni's legal teams against making public statements about their ongoing legal battle. The co-stars of the upcoming film 'It Ends With Us' are embroiled in a complex dispute involving allegations of sexual harassment, defamation, and attempts to damage reputations.
A judge has warned the lawyers of Blake Lively and Justin Baldoni to cease their public discussions surrounding their competing lawsuits. Both actors, who co-starred in the 2024 film It Ends With Us, have filed legal complaints against each other following an initial lawsuit by Lively. The 37-year-old actress accused Baldoni of sexual harassment on the film's set and an alleged subsequent plan to damage her reputation.
In response, Baldoni sued Lively and her husband, Ryan Reynolds, claiming they hijacked both the production and marketing of the film. He further alleges they attempted to smear his reputation and others involved in the production through false accusations.New York district court judge Lewis J Liman has scheduled a trial date to combine both claims for March 2026. However, on Monday, he warned both parties that their media comments could potentially influence the outcome of their cases. Lively's lawyer, Michael Gottlieb, argued that Baldoni's lawyer, Bryan Freedman, violated professional ethics rules by accusing the actress of 'bullying' in People magazine. He stated that such remarks could prejudice a potential jury pool, making it difficult to undo the damage. Freedman countered, claiming that his comments to the magazine and on a podcast were a direct response to a New York Times article published on December 21st, which he alleged 'completely devastated' Baldoni. He asserted that this was not a one-sided situation.Judge Liman subsequently adopted a state rule prohibiting most out-of-court statements that could potentially impact the case's outcome, with an exception to protect clients from harmful negative publicity. Neither lawyer objected to this ruling. Lively's legal team has previously accused Mr. Freedman of attempting to influence potential jurors by creating a website to release selected documents and communications between her and Baldoni.In late December, Lively filed a lawsuit against Baldoni, his production company Wayfarer Studios, and others in New York, alleging sexual harassment and attacks on her reputation. She is seeking unspecified damages. Baldoni filed his countersuit in January, accusing Lively and Reynolds of defamation and extortion. He is seeking at least $400 million (£321 million) in damages. Baldoni also sued The New York Times for libel after they published allegations against him. Lively is recognized for her roles in films like The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, Gossip Girl, The Town, and The Shallows. Baldoni is known for his work on the TV series Jane the Virgin and the 2019 film Five Feet Apart. He is also the author of the book Man Enough, which challenges traditional notions of masculinity
