Mum Judy, who coached the three-times Grand Slam-winning legend, insists the Olympics is the right time for Andy to hang up the racquet.

Judy Murray watched son Andy move towards the end of his remarkable career with a thrilling win – and the proud mum said: “He has changed the face of British tennis”.

She said: “Andy knows it’s the right time for him. His body won’t let him do what he needs to do now. He has made the decision that he’s stopping. If it’s the right one for him that’s great. It’s been a long and hugely successful career and he has the rest of his life to look forward to – and so do we.

Judy and Andy have led a project for a community tennis and sports centre to be built near the superstar’s home in Dunblane and earlier this month received millions in funding from the Lawn Tennis Association and the Scottish Government. Now she hopes Andy’s legacy will live on through an upturn in participation in the sport across the country.

Murray, who in 2013 became the first Brit to win Wimbledon since 1936 and backed it up with another SW19 triumph three years later, has been inundated with well-wishes from fans and his peers, including lifelong friend and rival Novak Djokovic. He had earlier received an enthusiastic welcome when he strode onto Court Suzanne Lenglen, Roland Garros’ second arena, behind Evans. But the stands stayed stubbornly half-full at best, for what could have been Murray’s final professional performance.
