Selina Meyer on the phone in Veep
Summary Julia Louis-Dreyfus reacts to the sudden rise in popularity of her TV show Veep in an interview at San Diego Comic-Con. Veep was a political series that ran on HBO for seven seasons from 2012 to 2019. It starred Louis-Dreyfus as the Vice President of the United States, Selina Meyer, who discovers that being Vice President is not what she expected.
"It's been a wild thing to witness. Viewership went up something insane like 350 percent. I'm delighted. I'm happy people are getting a kick out of it. And I know that Kamala Harris is — big time." Veep was not the only piece of media to explode in reaction to 2024 election news. Ron Howard's 2020 film Hillbilly Elegy saw a reported 1,180% increase in viewership after J.D. Vance, on whom the film is based, was named as former president Donald Trump's pick for his running mate. Hillbilly Elegy continued its streaming success the following week, becoming a global top 10 hit on Netflix for the week of July 15 to July 21.
