Tens of thousands of junior doctors are expected to vote for strike action next month as the “only option” to improve pay and hand their former nemesis Jeremy Hunt a “bloody nose”.
“There will be planning for it, people will find a way through it, but it’s just going to be incredibly hard.We’ll be dealing with absolute emergencies, people will be seen and treated and looked after but I doubt we’ll be able to do much more. She said: “[That’s] in terms of managing both business as usual, trying to undertake any kind of backlog work or dealing with emergency scenarios. It is going to get very hard which is why our continual message is ‘let’s round the table and have a conversation’.”
The votes come as more NHS staff join the BMA with junior doctor membership surging by more than 5,000 since 2019,. Junior doctors’ long-running row with Mr Hunt, who was Health Secretary between 2012 and 2018, saw them walk out of hospitals for the first time in 40 years. BMA deputy chair Dr Emma Runswick said: “We’ve had pay cut after pay cut after pay cut. This year, in real terms, approximately a 10 per cent pay cut. As the cost of living rises and people begin to struggle, that really begins to grate at you.and now about pay as well. And then there’s a new element of hope, which is maybe we can do something about this, maybe we can take a stand. All of the healthcare professions are beginning to come to this same conclusion.
