Two junior high school students in Petaluma were arrested on Wednesday for lighting explosive devices at school, causing the school to be locked down, officials say.
Petaluma's dispatch center received multiple calls about an explosion at Kenilworth Junior High School at around 11:37 a.m. By 12:19 p.m., the school was locked down. The Petaluma Police Department said arriving officers were informed the explosion happened near a bathroom next to the quad of the school.
School staff evacuated students to the blacktop while police searched the premises with the assistance of a K-9 unit. "The cause of the explosion was believed to be a commercial grade explosive device similar to that of an M-1000," police said. No one was injured in the explosion. Officers identified two juvenile students from Kenilworth, who were responsible for lighting the explosive device.
