Jürgen Moltmann, a German theologian who discovered his faith where many people of his generation had lost theirs — amid the ruin and barbarity of World War II — and emerged in the 1960s as one of the most influential Protestant philosophers of the modern era, died June 3 at his home in Tübingen, Germany. He was 98.Long before he was an eminent theologian, Dr.

Dr. Moltmann rejected the idea that God had died in the Holocaust and, likewise, the notion that the horrors committed in the concentration camps precluded a god who is good. He argued, rather, that God was present in the camps, enduring the agony with the victims. With his work, Dr. Moltmann, “in a sense, is trying to rescue the idea … of a god that is all powerful and all loving,” said Ori Z.

Although Dr. Moltmann’s books were erudite, he saw theology as urgently applicable to the ills of the world, including poverty, the denial of rights to African Americans in the Jim Crow South, and the misery caused by war and conflict around the world. Despite their secularism, his parents agreed to allow their son to be confirmed. Dr. Moltmann never forgot the virulent antisemitism of the pastor who oversaw his confirmation class, and who claimed, falsely and absurdly, that Jesus was not a Jew but rather an Aryan.
