Sen. Bob Menendez (D-N.J.) faces 16 felony counts, from bribery and extortion to wire fraud and acting as a foreign agent for Egypt.
NEW YORK — After nearly two months of hearing 37 witnesses weave a tale of gold bars and cash-filled envelopes, Egyptian intelligence officials and Qatari investors, the jury in Sen. Bob Menendez’s corruption trial is expected to begin deliberating Friday.
Federal prosecutors in the Southern District of New York and defense attorneys for Menendez and two co-defendants, New Jersey businessmen Fred Daibes and Wael “Will” Hana, delivered closing arguments over four days this week. U.S. District Judge Sidney H. Stein began giving instructions to the jury late Thursday afternoon, saying he expected to break for the evening and finish Friday morning.
An assistant U.S. attorney, Paul Monteleoni, told the jury in his closing argument that a mountain of evidence placed Menendez at the center of the bribery scheme, making phone calls, writing letters, meeting with Egyptian intelligence officials and sitting down with the New Jersey businessmen to get information about what they wanted him to do.
New Jersey’s former attorney general, Gurbir S. Grewal, and the state’s sitting U.S. attorney, Philip Sellinger, testified that Menendez approached them to complain about open criminal cases. A trucking and insurance executive, Jose Uribe, pleaded guilty to the bribery scheme this year and testified at Menendez’s trial that he bribed the senator with a Mercedes-Benz for his wife.
