Two Just Stop Oil protesters disrupted a performance of Shakespeare's 'The Tempest' starring Sigourney Weaver in London's West End, highlighting the urgency of climate action.
Protesters from the Just Stop Oil group disrupted a performance of Shakespeare's The Tempest starring Sigourney Weaver in London's West End . The incident occurred at the Theatre Royal in Drury Lane on Monday evening, when two activists climbed onto the stage during the play. Weaver, 75, was escorted away by staff as the protesters launched a confetti cannon and shouted, 'We'll have to stop the show ladies and gentlemen, sorry.
'A video posted online by Just Stop Oil shows the activists, holding a sign reading 'over 1.5 degrees is a global shipwreck', being met with a mix of boos and cheers from the audience. The sign references the recent announcement that 2024 was the warmest year on record globally, with the average temperature exceeding 1.5C above pre-industrial levels. One of the protesters, Hayley Walsh, a 42-year-old lecturer from Nottingham, expressed her fear for her three children, stating, 'I can't sleepwalk them into a future of food shortages, life-threatening storms and wars for resources.' She said her efforts, including writing to MPs, participating in marches, and teaching her students about sustainability, haven't yielded the necessary urgent change. The other activist, Richard Weir, a 60-year-old mechanical engineer from North Tyneside, added, 'We're already seeing the damage this crisis is doing to crops, homes and entire neighbourhoods.' He emphasized the need for a collective demand to move away from fossil fuels by 2030 to avoid the same fate as UK manufacturing. This disruption is the latest in a series of stunts by Just Stop Oil protesters, including the recent spray-painting of Charles Darwin's grave in Westminster.
