Two weeks after snapping his wedge to end a difficult opening round, Justin Lower closed Thursday morning's play at the Valero Texas Open with a two-shot lead.
Fighting nagging pain in his neck and back on the final hole of one of his worst rounds of the year, Justin Lower let his frustration boil over as he stepped out of the greenside bunker. He knew better than to play five weeks in a row, and as he slogged through the opening round two weeks ago at the Valspar Championship , that point became more and more clear. Stepping up to the par-4 ninth at the Copperhead Course in Florida , Lower sent his tee shot into a bunker left of the fairway.
” Lower needed only 23 putts Thursday. Among his six birdies in a bogey-free round were a 28-footer on 18, a 17-foot, 6-inch shot on 11, and another 28-foot putt on the second. He also managed a couple of critical saves out of the bunker, hitting a wedge to within 18 inches on 15 and another to within 4 feet on 13. “My short game’s been great. My putting’s finally starting to come around,” Lower said. “Hopefully, it continues that trend. I’m extremely proud of the round.
