Manchester City's pursuit of Douglas Luiz appears to have hit a snag as Juventus rebuffed their loan offer for the Brazilian midfielder. Luiz, who joined Juventus last summer, has struggled for playing time this season, leading to speculation about a return to the Premier League. City, seeking to bolster their midfield in the absence of Rodri, had approached Juventus with a loan proposal for Luiz. However, the offer, which did not include an obligation to buy Luiz in the summer, was rejected by the Italian club.
Juventus have reportedly rejected a loan offer from Manchester City to re-sign Douglas Luiz for the rest of this season, according to reports in the national media. Luiz, 26, spent two years as a City player from 2017 to 2019, but was on loan at Girona for most of that time after being unable to secure a work permit. He then signed for Aston Villa, and was able to play for them, making over 200 appearances across all competitions before joining Juventus last summer.
However, Luiz has made just 17 appearances this campaign, all but four of which have come as a substitute. That is why, six months after arriving in Turin for around £43million, there are rumours linking the Brazil international with a Premier League return. City are one club weighing-up whether to sign a midfielder during this window in the continued absence of Rodri. They have already dismissed the idea of signing Bruno Guimaraes or Martin Zubimendi. Atalanta's Ederson is a player they are interested in despite it appearing unlikely the Italian club will sell mid-season. Therefore, Luiz would be a short-term option with only a temporary move sought. The Times claims City have already asked about taking their former player on loan for the remainder of this season. However, their offer did not include an obligation to purchase the 18-cap Brazilian international this summer and as such, reportedly, received short shrift from the Turin club. City have done business with Juventus relatively recently, signing Joao Cancelo simultaneously as Danilo went in the opposite direction with a reported £75million moving between the two across those transactions. Going back over a decade, City also sold them Carlos Tevez in the summer of 2013, reportedly saving themselves around £27million by not having to honour the final year of his contract while also agreeing a £12million deal with the then-Serie A champions
