A new political ad acknowledges the economy, faith and access to affordable healthcare often cross party lines

IN PHOENIX, USA – “When you’re raised by an immigrant mother, you learn what’s possible with determination,” says the narrator’s voice. “With that determination, went from working in McDonald’s to prosecutor, State Attorney General, US Senator and our Vice President in only one generation.”, is central to a new way to appeal to this increasingly important voting block with a simple idea: to address the concerns they have like any other voter, rather than focusing primarily on their ethnicity.

Many remember his broadside about people from Mexico as “bringing drugs” and “bringing crime” and “rapists” on the day in 2015 when he launched his first bid for president. “She’s pivoted 180 degrees,” Madrid says. “She’s not talking about immigration reform, she’s talking about border security. It’s exactly the right move.”described as one of her party’s “toughest speeches on immigration and border policy in a generation”.In her speech, she said America had been “enriched” by immigrants. Yet, she added: “The United States is a sovereign nation. And I believe we have a duty to set rules at our border, and to enforce them. I take that responsibility very seriously.

There are local elected Latino officials and activists who warm up the crowd at this lunchtime meeting, and who know more about the issues in Arizona than the guest speaker flying in from Washington DC. The other candidate, she says, is someone who on the first day of his campaign called Mexicans rapists and drug dealers who were “poisoning the blood of our country”.The mood is one of quiet optimism, mixed with a perhaps silent, unspoken fear about what happens if Harris does not prevail. The campaign has distributed posters of Harris with a striking image and the words “La Presidenta”.

“People have specifically told me my conversation with them has made a difference and that they will be voting for Kamala Harris.” One morning, the Arizona Republican Party holds an event with Latino voters, politicians and members of the business community. “Many of us come from countries where there is Communism, and that’s what they want to take us to right now.”

“Inflation is killing us when we go to the store to buy milk for our kids, that matters to us. When we’re putting gas in our car, that matters to us. We talk about the education of their kids, and the kids not being indoctrinated, but actually educated. That matters to Hispanic families.”, the top priority is the economy, followed by health care , violent crime , gun policy , immigration and Supreme Court appointments .
