US vice-president invited to funeral of black man who died after being beaten by police officers
with second-degree murder and dismissed from the force. The department confirmed on Monday that a sixth officer, Preston Hemphill, who is white, had been suspended from duty soon after the attack on 7 January but has not been criminally charged.
The family’s attorney, Ben Crump, said on Tuesday that police had not been candid with Nichols’ mother about the incident, which he referred to as a “police lynching”.The family gathered on Tuesday evening with Rev Sharpton at the Mason Temple Church of God in Christ in Memphis – where the Rev Martin Luther King Jr delivered his final speech the night before he was assassinated in 1968 – to speak about Nichols and the latest developments in the case.
