Polish rider Kasia Niewiadoma clung on for a career-defining victory, beating Demi Vollering by just four seconds after a brutal final climb

Polish rider clings to yellow jersey on Alpe d’Huez, beating defending champion Demi Vollering by just four seconds –the closest ever margin in the history of the Tour – after a tense final climb to Alpe d’Huez.

Vollering’s make-or-break attack came towards the top of the Col du Glandon, the penultimate climb, 55 kilometres from the finish at the Alpine ski station. Three kilometres from the summit, the defending champion made her move, with race leader Niewiadoma unable to respond. But in the ensuing kilometres, tactical complications and conflicting objectives worked against Vollering and closed the gap once more, as the rivals approached the foot of the 21 hairpins to Alpe d’Huez. At the foot of the climb, Vollering led Niewiadoma by only 44 seconds.
