He might squeeze in watching his boy between Glasgow golf days
And, every now and then – as was the case on Sunday – he might even be spotted in the east end of the city, watching his son add a silver lining to his own career as one of the most recognisable goalkeepers in European football. Most of the time, though, the former Manchester United colossus will be working on his handicap on some of the country’s top golf courses - as an unexpected perk of his boy’s new job.
There is certainly a touch of the football royalty where this family is concerned and, fresh from his coronation as Joe Hart’s successor in Sunday’s 4-0 opening day romp over Kilmarnock, Schmeichel is already hankering after the pomp and ceremony of Champions League nights under the lights. “I’ve heard a lot about it but it’s always different when you get to experience it for yourself out there on the pitch. I don’t think I’ve ever been to any game where I haven’t wanted to be out on the pitch to experience it. It’s never the same watching on from the stand.”
‘We had one very good season in the Champions League at Leicester but we got knocked out by Atletico Madrid who got to the final through a penalty that wasn’t a penalty. But I’m not bitter. So that was a big thing as well when I got the chance to come here.” “I’m not going to change anything like that. I’m not Joe. Joe and myself are very good friends but we are very different characters. But yeah I’m available for anyone who needs any kind of experience or assistance.”
“It’s something I’ve always liked doing, something I’ve always enjoyed doing. I’ve always made a point - particularly when I was younger - to train with the outfielders.
