The mood is set to turn poignant when veteran broadcaster Kate shares with the audience that this will be her first Christmas since the loss of her husband, Derek Draper, who passed away on 3rd January 2024 at 56 years old. Kate, alongside her children Billy and Darcey, have faced challenging times following the devastating impact Covid-19 had on their family, with the Labour lobbyist enduring the virus's lasting consequences for nearly four years. Looking towards the holiday season as a single parent, Kate has spoken candidly with her fellow presenters about the sorrow she is enduring. In a touching exchange, while discussing the often-overlooked efforts of carers, Kate confided to co-presenter Susanna Reid, admitting: 'It's very raw Susanna to be honest. It's very raw,' reports the Mirror. She continued: 'I mean this time last year, Derek was still alive - very sick. We thought it was the toughest Christmas because weirdly in 2020 we had a lot of hope that he was coming out... I think that I am in the early stages of grief... The pain and the feeling is still there.' Over the past four years, Kate and her family have experienced a rollercoaster of emotions as Derek repeatedly battled for his life, even being placed into an induced coma after developing holes in major organs. Following an extended hospital stay, he was finally disconnected from all machines and breathing apparatus in April 2021. Medics delivered the news that Kate and her children had been anxiously awaiting - Derek was ready to return home. While this was a positive development for the family, Derek was far from fully recovered and required constant care at their residence
