This article explores the close relationship between Kate Middleton and Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh. Both women share 'ordinary' backgrounds compared to their Royal spouses and have found common ground in their experiences.

Kate Middleton and her sister-in-law Sophie, Duchess of Edinburgh, share a surprisingly close connection. Both senior royals have 'ordinary' backgrounds compared to their Royal spouses - Prince William and Prince Edward, and their camaraderie has flourished in Windsor, where they are practically neighbours.

Royal expert Katie Nicholl shared: 'Sophie and Catherine are very close – I think much more so than people realise,' adding, 'There's not a huge age difference between them, and Sophie really welcomed Catherine when she married into the family. She was an outsider and so-called commoner, just as Sophie was, so they had that bond from an early stage.' Sophie grew up in Kent to working parents and attended top-notch private schools. However, according to a 2001 BBC report, the Rhys-Jones family, although affluent, didn't socialise in the highest circles. Kate's beginnings were in Berkshire, raised by a flight attendant and a flight dispatcher in an upper-middle class home. Photos of the duo have always suggested a unique bond, as seen at Royal Ascot in 2017, where they were caught on camera laughing as Sophie almost landed on Kate after stumbling into their carriage. They've been spotted together on shopping trips in London and watching Wimbledon, and in 2018, they teamed up to host the Commonwealth Fashion Exchange at Buckingham Palace. During the pandemic, the two women also collaborated to make a video call to hard-working nurses in various global locations, including Australia, India, Malawi, the Bahamas and Cyprus. Unlike other family in-laws like the late Princess Diana and Meghan Markle who spoke about their difficulties adjusting to The Firm's strict expectations, Sophie - similar to Kate - seems to be universally respected and liked, earning her the nickname 'bridge between generations', reports the Mirror
