The headmistress, who was appointed Social Mobility Commissioner in November 2021, was also reported to the police for a hate crime last year after inviting right-wing Canadian professor Jordan Peterson to speak at her school in Wembley. Professor Peterson is a psychologist is known for his contentious views on gender and has previously claimed masculinity is “under assault”.
However, Ms Birbalsingh has also received praise for her radical approach to education. Her community free school in north London, which she established in 2014, was judged “outstanding” by Ofsted, with more than half of all GCSE grades in 2019 reaching level 7 or above. She allowed cameras into the school for the first time last year for a documentary on ITV entitled Britain’s Strictest Headmistress, which saw her gain praise from the likes of Cabinet minister Michael Gove over her strict teaching methods.
