Katherine Ryan's 'baby sign language' method to potty train 8 month old explained
Katherine Ryan hit the headlines last year when she revealed she'd potty trained her eight month old son Fred, after using the 'baby sign language' method.
The comedian, 39, is just one of many famous faces who have praised the method, which is also known as Elimination Communication or just simply EC.Ingrid Bauer coined the EC term in 2001 in her book, Diaper Free: The Gentle Wisdom of Natural Infant Hygiene. However the principle is not new with civilisations around the world practising the method because nappies are not readily available or part of their culture.

Mum-of-two Rachel, 37, started potty training her daughter Maven when she was just three months old in a bid to be more environmentally friendly, and used washable cloth nappies alongside the training.
