Katie Taylor successfully defended her world titles with a dramatic victory over a bloodied Amanda Serrano, despite being booed as she left the ring. Two years after edging out Serrano in what became an instant classic encounter in New York, the pair reconvened on the undercard of Mike Tyson's bout with Jake Paul on Friday night - and it was a fight that lived up to expectations.
Taylor brushed off criticism about the result, saying, "That's what a boxer does, we train to recover from those moments. Any punch can change a fight in boxing. She's a hard puncher, she's a very tough woman and I prepared for that. I don't care if the commentary team or the crowd disagree with the result. The only ones that matter are the judges around the ring."
Serrano remained cool and collected as she methodically pursued Taylor around the ring. In the fourth round, Taylor decided to take a risk and fight back aggressively, much to the delight of the 70,000 spectators who were reminded of Madison Square Garden. Any doubts about this fight matching up to its predecessor were quickly dispelled as Serrano fought back in the seventh round, increasing the pressure. The Puerto Rican's corner had managed to control the worst of the bleeding as the challenger tried to assert her dominance in the remaining rounds.
