Singer Katy Perry has spoken about her relationship with partner Orlando Bloom, and how a year-long break up was the best thing for the couple who are now engaged with a daughter
Singer Katy Perry has revealed she “would be dead” if she and her partner Orlando Bloom hadn’t taken a year-long break early on in their relationship. The couple first started dating in 2016, but split a year later. They then got back together in late 2018, got engaged on Valentine’s Day in 2019, and Katy gave birth to their daughter Daisy Dove in August 2020.
On the Call Her Daddy podcast hosted by Alex Cooper, Katy, who turns 40 next month, spoke about the early days of their relationship. “We weren’t, like, really in it from day one,” she said. “I mean, he was in a way, because he had just done a huge time of celibacy, and he had set intentions. I was fresh out of a relationship, and I was just like, ‘I can’t do this anymore. I need to go swim in a different pond,’ but I had yet to do a lot of real work.
Shortly after they started dating, Orlando went to the Hoffman Institute, a “residential and personal growth retreat” in California, and after he returned the couple split up. Katy later went to the Hoffman Institute herself. “I had a really tough year, and I finally went to Hoffman towards the end of that year that we were separated, and then I got the tools and spoke the same language, and it changed my life,” she said. “It saved my life. I would be dead without it.
The second time around, Katy confirmed that the couple’s relationship is much better. “We all have our strengths and then our opportunities for growth. But one of his strengths when I crumble, he can step in and be that anchor. That’s amazing because I’m usually just alpha, alpha, you know? I’m like testosterone, testosterone. ‘I got this. I don’t need any help,’ but actually I do need help. I do need a partner,” she said.
Orlando, meanwhile, who is best known for his roles in The Lord of the Rings and Pirates of the Caribbean movies, was in a relationship with actress Kate Bosworth for three years, and then was married to model Miranda Kerr, with whom he has 13-year-old son Flynn.
