Keely Hodgkinson, Olympic 800m gold medalist, has been crowned BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2024. Her dominant performances throughout the year, including a historic Olympic victory, earned her the prestigious award.
Olympic 800m gold medallist Keely Hodgkinson has been voted BBC Sports Personality of the Year 2024. The 22-year-old track and field superstar has been unbeatable over 800 metres in 2024, claiming her first Olympic title in imperious fashion in Paris. Hodgkinson handled the pressure of being the favourite impressively to dominate the race. She also retained her European title and set a new British record with the fastest time by a European athlete this century.
Darts player Luke Littler was second, with England cricketer Joe Root third. Sarah Storey, Alex Yee and Jude Bellingham were also shortlisted for the award by a panel of experts, with the winner decided by a public vote. Hodgkinson is the fourth successive woman to win the award, after England goalkeeper Mary Earps was named Sports Personality of the Year in 2023. After being announced as the winner by Sir Chris Hoy, Hodgkinson said on stage: “This year has been absolutely incredible for me. “I achieved everything I set out to do on the outdoor track, which is kind of rare, so I’m so grateful to be in this position. Thank you to everyone who voted at home – I hope you all loved watching Paris just as much as I loved competing in it.
