Writing in the Daily Record, Social Justice Secretary Shirley-Anne Somerville urges the Labour Government to act to combat poverty.

When First Minister John Swinney formed his new Government, he set out his defining mission, to eradicate child poverty.

So, it was deeply disappointing that the Chancellor failed in her statement this week to mention child poverty and instead announced yet more austerity. The policy will continue to impact more children every year until it reaches full roll out – at which point the Institute for Fiscal Studies estimate 500,000 children across the UK would be kept out of poverty each year if it were scrapped.

The Bedroom Tax and Benefit Cap are further cruel policies introduced by the previous government that could have been scrapped by the new government. We are willing to work with the UK Government on how they can transform the UK social security system and improve people’s lives, but they must be mission led and match the Scottish Government’s ambition to eradicate child poverty. Our actions are estimated to keep 100,000 children out of relative poverty this year.

We are also committed to ensuring all children and young people have access to high quality early learning and childcare to receive the support they need to reach their full potential.
