Starmer would need to tread carefully before axing his deputy
A senior government minister under fire. A drip-drip feed of revelations. A prime minister under pressure to act. Only bad options if they do. This chain of events will be familiar to any recent inhabitant of 10 Downing Street. Rishi Sunak had it with– who both quit before they were pushed – and his former party chairman Nadhim Zahawi, who he sacked.
However, several neighbours have questioned this – suggesting she was primarily at Lowndes Lane. If so, then Rayner should have paid capital gains tax on the profit she made when she sold Vicarage Road and she could also be in breach of electoral law for being registered to vote at the other property.
The official line from Labour is there is nothing to see here but privately aides will express concern that it is becoming a major distraction for the party. Not least because it means one of the party’s most effective attack dogs is now unable to operate full steam. While the security of Rayner’s post is backed by Labour aides, it doesn’t help thatreported one member of the shadow Cabinet was overheard suggesting they were ready and poised to step in and take on her briefs should they need to.
