Rail union Aslef has announced some of its members will be walking out again. Time for the PM to get tough
Transport unions in particular are good at getting their members a good deal
Just 24 hours after Transport Secretary Louise Haigh announced she had struck a deal to end the protracted stand-off with train drivers over their pay, that same union, Aslef, announced some of its members would be walking outonly LNER drivers will be on strike Add to that the anxiety of businesses about the party’s workers’ rights package, and even non-Tories might be wondering whether the message from the first six weeks of the Labour Government is that the unions are back on top. It is a big departure from the tough, New Labour-style government that Starmer wanted to lead. It also seems rather naive.
Now as Prime Minister, he has to decide whether he has another big spat with a union to show that he hasn’t changed, or whether he’s happy with the impression that is emerging from the past few weeks of deals between ministers and bosses. Some of that pre-election bickering now appears rather muted, as though there might have been an unspoken understanding with the unions that once polling day was over, they would get what they wanted in pay disputes and repeal of anti-strike laws.
