Sir Keir Starmer said the Government is not making full use of its testing capacity to see if people have Covid-19.

Mr Raab said he was ‘confident’ the government would meet its ambitious target but claimed: ‘it is about demand’.

Shadow health minister and A&E doctor Dr Rosena Allin-Khan tweeted: ‘The Government needs to ensure the number of tests carried out reaches 100,000 per day by the end of April. Capacity is irrelevant if it’s not used. ‘We can’t get a grip on the coronavirus crisis without understanding how widespread the pandemic is.’Sir Keir also said the Government’s testing plan for NHS workers had an ‘obvious problem’ since care workers have to self isolate if they or their family show symptoms and are being instructed to travel to testing centres – which are ‘often very many miles away.

The Labour leader, who replaced Jeremy Corbyn earlier this month, said the ‘stress test’ was Personal Protective Equipment for NHS workers and the government plan was ‘clearly not working’. He went on: ‘There is a pattern emerging here – we were slow into lockdown, slow on testing, slow on protective equipment and now slow to take up these offers [on PPE] from British firms.’
