For all the Prime Minister's warm words, the reality will be much starker
Unless Prime Minister Keir Starmer seeks to reopen the Trade and Cooperation Agreement and strikes a fundamental closer relationship with Brussels, he will find all that’s on offer are tweaks around the edges
A quick reminder of how we arrived here. Since Boris Johnson struck the UK exit agreement back in 2020, followed by the Trade and Co-operation Agreement, there has been a lot of speculation about whether UK-EU relations are right. Opinion polling has suggested too that people aren’t happy with the status quo and feel that Brexit might have been a mistake. that eased the post-Brexit checks on goods heading to Northern Ireland.
However, more practical implications of Brexit are still to come – the full level of checks on goods coming into the UK from Europe have yet to be implemented, delayed several times by Conservative ministers. The fingerprint entry and exit system is also due to kick in later this year, with potential disruption at Eurostar and the Port of Dover.
Yet most of the recent talk from Starmer and the Labour leadership has been about a security pact and some sort of arrangement to tackle the small boats problem. Starmer’s early decision towas not only a campaign promise, it was the first sign that pan-European solutions are his main focus. We’re likely to see a further rise in the number of boats crossing the channel over the summer, now that any possible deterrent has gone.
