One person who can cheerfully tick off all his new year resolutions and enjoy a very merry Christmas is leader of the Labour Party, Sir Keir Starmer ✍️ ayeshahazarika for ipaperviews
Starmer lets strong figures like Rachel Reeves, Wes Streeting, Ed Miliband and Yvette Cooper get on with their briefs.
The big joke about Labour under the Corbyn years was that it had been infiltrated by closet Tories bringing the party down from within. That’s now the quip about the Conservative Party, including its MPs and members who vote for absolute political puddings. It still makes me laugh to think back to the tortuous first leadership contest.
When you think back to how broken Labour was as a political force just three years ago after Johnson thrashed Jeremy Corbyn in 2019, Starmer has done a remarkable job in rebuilding the party. Many supporters – including myself – were nervous that Starmer had spent too much time at the start of his time as leader dealing with internal party matters, but his strategy proved to be correct.
Starmer is also quite a rare thing in politics. He is a good, mature manager. Perhaps it’s because he’s a bit older and had a successful career running a big organisation outside politics , but he lets strong figures like Reeves, Wes Streeting, Ed Miliband and Yvette Cooper get on with their briefs. He sees strength in a well-run, disciplined team and he doesn’t want it to be all about him., as we saw with his suspension of Jeremy Corbyn.
