, offers a first glimpse of the 34-year-old Oscar nominee as feminist activist Sally Alexander. Due out in March 2020, the film reimagines Alexander’s storming of the 1970 Miss World pageant at London’s Royal Albert Hall, which saw her and other members of the Women’s Liberation Movement dropping flour bombs onto the stage and flinging feminist pamphlets into the audience.
In the trailer, which unfolds to the sounds of Lesley Gore’s “You Don’t Own Me”, we see Keeley Hawes as pageant executive Julia Morley, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw as the pageant winner, Grenada’s Jennifer Hosten. Written by Rebecca Frayn and Gaby Chiappe and produced by Suzanne Mackie and Sarah-Jane Wheale, the film, which touches on women’s rights and racism, couldn’t feel more timely.
Aside from the real story that inspired it and the film’s many comic moments, there’s the matter of the clothes to look forward to. From psychedelic prints to liberal amounts of brown, it’s an homage to ’70s style. Greg Kinnear stars as Bob Hope , with Jessie Buckley and Rhys Ifans rounding out a stellar ensemble cast.More from British Vogue:
