Keith reckons Gers boss now has a credibility problem after expensive rebuild results in defeat to patched up Celtic.
In fact, the only thing that can keep Michael Beale’s credibility intact as Rangers manager is the prospect of a clear run at lifting the League Cup and securing the first silverware of the season. And even then, it might not be quite enough unless Beale begins to show signs that he is leading his team in the right direction and with a clear and cohesive strategy.
Bennett could hardly have been expected to provide his manager with more help during a whirlwind of a transfer window during which new signings were arriving on an almost weekly – sometimes daily – basis. And the man in charge of the club’s command centre signed it all off in the absolute belief Beale’s big vision was meticulously planned out.
All of which adds weight to the suspicion the foundations of Beale’s big rebuild have been set in dodgy concrete. Well, what other conclusion can be reached when Matondo wasn’t talented enough to make it into an attack that was deemed so unfit for purpose by Beale it had to be torn down and entirely reconstructed over the close season?
Beale may have hoped Matondo would provide his side with a threat from wide areas, where his full-backs are almost always the providers in chief But James Tavernier looked scared stiff at the thought of what Daizen Maeda might do to him if he ventured too far across the halfway line. Lagerbielke was particularly error prone. But the Swede would get away with one enormous howler in the 27th minute when he dallied for long enough to be robbed of the ball by Dessers who muscled his way into the Celtic box to set up Roofe for what appeared to be the opening goal of the game.
