Badenoch won the leadership contest after securing 53,806 votes

Kemi Badenoch has been the favourite to take over as leader of the Conservative party since before there was even a vacancy, but her eventual victory was hard-fought. Turnout in the leadership election was low at 73 per cent - perhaps because, for the first time in nearly two decades, the Tory members were electing a mere Leader of the Opposition rather than a Prime Minister.

A year ago, Westminster insiders laughed at the idea of Robert Jenrick being a serious contender for the leadership of his party; the fact that he came so close shows he has become a real power player, who will have to be offered a senior role by his erstwhile opponent. But Mrs Badenoch won fair and square, helped by support from Tory big-hitters across the political spectrum, and with only 121 MPs the party cannot afford any more splits and in-fighting.
