The spectre of Liz Truss has scared candidates from talking about Labour's weak spot: the economy
For the depleted tribe of Tory members, a thin crowd of diehard acolytes and the weary leadership candidate teams arriving at, this is the week that the jelly will begin to set in the mould of the party’s fortunes. It is still a very shaky dish., a grinding month of badly-handled entanglements over donor favours and turf wars in No 10, as well as an impending Budget which is going to hit a swathe of voters with new or rising taxes, the Opposition is hardly short of material.
One reason the jelly remains so irresolutely wobbly is that the candidates are struggling in the area that matters most to their chance of building a durable assault on the Government: the economy, and the party’s plan to boost flabby British growth. So we have heard from Kemi Badenoch this weekend on the need for a more “hard-nosed” policy on immigration”, insisting on the integration of new immigrants and asylum seekers in to “British values”.
How should Conservatives shape their message? “Low tax” has been the common thread of the arguments, so much so that Badenoch tangled herself in knots over the weekend bywas simply, “a function of tax”. That has proved an easy attack point for her opponents – and crucially allowed her main rival, Jenrick, to exploit an enforced error.A hasty correction that this did not mean she reckons new mothers’ benefits would be a great place to start slashing was issued.
Merely saying “I told you so”, however, will not much advance their case. The problem for the contenders is that the legacy ofThere are areas where the UK could use its freedom to deregulate, or where cutting taxes would act as a measure to make the UK more competitive. But you would not know from the present discourse what the candidates’ fundamental view of success looks like, even in outline or aspiration.
