Kentish Town Tube station will finally reopen today, December 23, after being shut for 18 months for repairs. Since June 2023, the Northern line stop had been closed to allow Transport for London (TfL) to carry out essential works. This included replacing the 'most unreliable' escalators on the network, built in 1997. The station was initially set to reopen in June, but structural problems were discovered, leading to delays.
Degrading concrete in the ceiling and floor pushed the opening date further to late this year. However, in a Christmas miracle for Northern line commuters, the station will be back in service today. The station will be 'future proof' with new escalators expected to last at least 40 years, alongside new ticket gates, signage and tiling. TfL says the work will improve reliability and avoid short-notice closures. For the past 18 months, Thameslink trains have been calling at the railway station, but any riders wanting to switch to the Tube have had to get off. This will be the case for slightly longer, as engineering works mean transferring between the two cannot happen until December 30
