Bad news keeps coming for Downer, with its joint venture with French group Keolis given only a small consolation prize as a contract ends prematurely.

, has received only a minor consolation prize as the South Australian government takes back into public hands a $2.1 billion metropolitan train contract.

SA Premier Peter Malinauskas said he didn’t want to “demonise” Keolis Downer, but it was made clear to them that his government would end a train privatisation contract if it won the March 2022 election – which it did.

Keolis Downer is the largest private operator of transport services in Australia. Paris-headquartered Keolis has partnered with Downer in Australia since 2009 and the venture’s transport services include Melbourne’s Yarra Trams, the Gold Coast light rail and Newcastle’s integrated transport networks.Mr Malinauskas said on Sunday that the government had played hardball because it had made it clear before a March 2022 state election that they would reverse the privatisation if they were elected.
