Ketchikan area officials issue disaster declaration after blaze guts fire station, destroys equipmentKETCHIKAN, Alaska - Ketchikan Area Mayors are taking action after a major fire at the South Tongass Volunteer Fire Department last Tuesday left the station unusable and five emergency vehicles with serious damage.

The fire broke out in the early morning hours of April 9 and destroyed two medical services units, one firetruck and left the whole building unusable for the foreseeable future. No one was inside the station when the fire started and there were no injuries reported, according to South Tongass Fire Chief Steve Rydeen.

The fire alarm first alerted of the fire at 2:25 a.m. on Tuesday morning, but the first responding apparatus didn’t get there until 2:48 a.m. Chief Rydeen says both he and the investigator believe it was due to fixed heat detectors that took a while to hit the 200 degree mark and finally begin alerting.

The station has replacement value insurance, with the building valued at approximately $4 million. Until Chief Rydeen has a better assessment on the equipment lost, it’s unknown how much will need to be replaced.
