Keyless car technology is increasingly becoming a target for thieves, with up to 70% of stolen vehicles last year being keyless models. Sophisticated relay attack methods are used by criminals in pairs to intercept signals between key fobs and cars, allowing them to unlock and steal vehicles. Experts recommend storing car keys in metal-lined areas like refrigerators or using Faraday pouches to prevent signal interception. Additional security measures include parking in locked garages, keeping keys away from windows and doors, and ensuring windows are securely closed at night.
Keyless technology is contributing to an increase in car thefts , with up to 70 per cent of all cars stolen last year being keyless models, according to insurers. This wave of car thefts has seen cars taken from outside of owners' homes as thieves use increasingly-sophisticated ways to gain access to the vehicles.
Thieves hold the intermitters up against doors, windows and walls to gain a signal from the key fob, ultimately unlocking the car without the need for the actual key in their hand. And now drivers have been told to keep their car keys in their fridge to deter thieves. Briggs said: “Placing your car keys in the fridge door is a simple yet effective way to shield them from signal relays. While some recommend using a microwave, this can risk accidental damage if the appliance is switched on. The fridge is a safer and more practical alternative for most households.”
