A social media fad encourages people, often teenage boys, to steal certain models of Kia and Hyundai cars. The fad has made it to Texas, writes contributor Anna Hanks.If you aren’t on social media much or haven’t had your car stolen recently, you might not be aware that there is aand hashtag on TikTok.
Being the victim of any car theft is upsetting and a major life pain. Brooks was so upset by having had her car stolen — and so determined not to go through the experience a second time — that even after getting the security update done on her car, she now parks right up next to her house and has a homemade laminated sign telling potential thieves that it has anti-theft measures and a steering wheel lock..
How to fix this issue? The Austin City Council along with other cities, including Seattle, Baltimore, Philadelphia and New York, passed resolutions calling for the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to issue a recall of these vehicles.Austin City Council member Vanessa Fuentes sponsored the resolution there. She told me the state of Texas could be doing more to get the message out to vulnerable drivers.
If you have one of these cars, you also might want to try getting a steering wheel lock or putting an Airtag in your car so you can track it.Something that should come out of this debacle: strengthening the federal requirements for vehicular anti-theft measures. Hyundai noted that these often stolen vehicles were compliant with federal anti-theft regulations.
