May the best dessert win at the Tanana Valley State Fair.

Published: Aug. 3, 2024 at 10:49 AM AKDTFAIRBANKS, Alaska - The competition and the ovens were heating up at the Tanana Valley State Fair on Friday, as a lineup of young bakers competed to show off their best recipes. Three contestants advanced to this round by winning ribbons with their dessert entries.

“I entered three little tarts,” explained 11-year-old contestant Ada, “a blueberry one, an apple cranberry one, and a raspberry one. We go out and pick wild blueberries and wild cranberries, and we’ve got a bunch of rhubarb in our yard.” “I’m making brownies,” explained another contestant, Bennett, who said that he had just learned on Friday morning that he would be competing.

“What I’m making today is a fireweed nectar cake,” said Emily, the third Junior contestant. “It’s a homemade recipe I made from scratch using the base of an applesauce cake, adding fireweed jelly and Alaskan birch syrup.”“I first started off with my mom when we were baking gingerbread houses when I was really little, about two years old,” Emily said, “and it just kind of blossomed into something more.

Over the past few years Emily has won the Junior Bake-Off three times, and she hopes to open her own dessert bakery after finishing school.Copyright 2024 KTVF. All rights reserved.
