Vinny Corey's side lost their Division One status after 10 seasons and face a tough opener against neighbours Cavan on Sunday

Captain Kieran Duffy says Monaghan have to up their standards if they’re to compete hard in Ulster again. Duffy - in his 14th year with the county - reckons the quality of Ulster sides has “really risen.”

In fact, they’ve only made one Ulster final since 2015, losing out to Tyrone at Croke Park in the 2021 decider. This Spring they also lost their Division 1 status, after 10 years in the top division. “Of course playing and when you are winning - and we were winning in that couple of years - of course you are thinking what are we going to do next year,” said Duffy.

“It’s just that challenge really,” he says. “You want to be competing against the best players on the best stage. With the Allianz League, look at any division, they are all quite competitive and then you are going into a good championship. You can ship a provincial defeat and a group loss and still get through with one or two victories, as the top three sides move on into the next phase.
