In a surprising turn of events, killer whales have been observed hunting young whale sharks in the southern Gulf of California. The attacks, which have been recorded in four separate incidents, involve collaborative efforts to target the sharks' pelvic areas, leading to fatality. This marks a new behavior never before seen in killer whales.
KILLER whales have declared war on the world's biggest sharks as they train themselves in new deadly skills to kill the sea beasts.Experts believe the gargantuan apex predators may have gained "special" knowledge to allow them to hunt in a way that's never been seen in their species before.have reported four separate incidents of killer whales - which grow up to 59ft long - are hunting young whale sharks for the first time.
A female orca previously observed in the presence of Moctezuma participated in one hunt also, suggesting they could be related or members of the same pod. "By keeping it under control, the orcas then have greater ease and speed in approaching the pelvic area of the shark and are able to extract organs of nutritional importance for them."
The researchers said other killer whales orcas may have learned to do the same thing in other regions, but evidence is limited.
