Daniel Bartlam, who murdered his mother at age 14, has been moved to an open prison after serving 12 years of his sentence. The Parole Board recommended the move, citing a reduced risk to the public.
A killer who murdered his mother when he was just 14-years-old at their home has been moved to an open prison. Daniel Bartlam lived with his mother, younger sibling and their family dog in Georgia Drive, Redhill when he developed a dark obsession with Coronation Street character, John Stape.
Similarly to how John killed Charlotte Hoyle with a hammer and staged the scene to look like she died in a tram crash, Bartlam composed a script on his computer that depicted a boy named after himself who brutally murders his own mother. He carried out the horrific act on Easter Monday in April 2011 when he attacked his mother Jacqueline, 47, with a claw hammer, striking her head and face seven times. He then moved her body to the floor, surrounded it with newspaper, doused it in petrol, and set it ablaze. Nearby, Daniel placed a lump hammer, attempting to suggest that an intruder had committed the act and fled through a window. The weapon used in the crime was cleaned with a cleaning fluid and hidden in his bedroom by him, before he fled the burning house with his brother and dog. However, unlike his play's conclusion, Bartlam did not evade justice for his crime and he was found guilty by a jury. Now 27, Bartlam has served 12 years of his sentence and has been moved to an open prison. A recommendation for his move was made by the Parole Board, however, the final decision belonged with the Secretary of State for Justice. A spokesperson for the Parole Board said: 'We can confirm that the Parole Board recommended a move to an open conditions prison following an oral hearing for Daniel Bartlam. We will only make a recommendation for open conditions if a Parole Board panel is satisfied that the risk to the public has reduced sufficiently to be manageable in an open prison.' The spokesperson explained that the move involved testing Bartlam's readiness for a potential return into the community in future. Prisoners who break the open conditions will be returned to closed condition
