This story of greed and betrayal is a fine film ruined by its inordinate length
Lily Gladstone, left, and Leonardo DiCaprio in a scene from ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’ It’s the slow motion that’s so aggravating. In a film 206 minutes long, you can’t help wishing thatcomes the scene where the Native American Osage people discover oil on their land in Oklahoma. We see the black liquid spurting out of the ground, just as it did when James Dean struck it rich in. It’s just a pity you have to strip away so much padding to get to it.
The net effect of all this detail is to reduce the pacing yet further. As the death count mounts, the film risks becoming a bit of a dirge.is a parable about the loss of innocence. Scorsese has two of his muses in the leading roles and both give superb performances.plays Ernest Burkhart, a chancer and small-time crook, back in Oklahoma after serving as an infantry cook in the First World War. He likes gambling and women.
DiCaprio often plays anti-heroes for Scorsese. His character here is one of his most venal, someone ready to betray his Osage wife Mollie and to murder off her family if it will make him just a little bit richer. Mollie sees right through him but falls for his boyish, huckster-like charm. He is a strangely naive figure who, at times, seems genuinely to love Mollie. But he loves money more and is under the thumb of his scheming uncle.
Menacing, metronomic but strangely beguiling music by the late Robbie Robertson adds to the increasingly sinister tone of the film. As Mollie’s family is killed off one by one, there are staged suicides, explosions and poisonings. But the racist white authorities never bother investigating the deaths. Mollie is resilient and tenacious – she fights back, even as her own health begins to fail.
