The Fawkes Festival night has been binned less than five hours before it was due to take place.

A controversial fireworks display at Kilmarnock's Dean Park has been axed following 'threats' made to staff.Their statement follows the SSPCA calling on organisers to axe the Fawkes Festival in the park.

The first leg of the event took place on Sunday and a second night was due to take place this evening.East Ayrshire Leisure posted on Facebook: "It is with regret that following a number of direct threats made towards members of our staff, East Ayrshire Leisure Trust have taken the decision to cancel tonight’s Fawkes Festival at Dean Castle Country Park.

"Health & Safety is of paramount importance to our organisation and due to the nature and number of these unauthorised access threats, we can no longer guarantee the safety of the large number of public who are due to attend the event this evening, our staff and the animals. "East Ayrshire Leisure Trust are now working closely with the event company to contact all members of the public who were due to attend tonight’s event to advise them of the cancellation. Refunds will be processed automatically by the event team.
