The team at Dior worked closely with Blame’s former assistant Karlie Shelley and the Trust Judy Blame – the foundation keeping his legacy alive – to commemorate his vision with exactitude. “The proceeds will go to the archive.” The tribute takes the form of accessories such as opera gloves, beret hats, and trinkets nodding to Blame’s dexterous hands. The now iconic newspaper print was also brought into play.
Though he’s got his own personal obsessions and signatures, Kim Jones is not alienating himself from Monsieur Dior and the house’s history, au contraire. The clothes looked ridiculously good and exuded the level of craftsmanship one expects from a storied house. Jones cites a paisley from the 1970’s –from the Marc Bohan era– and elements from Monsieur Dior, including his signature Toile de Jouy . The buta motif was embroidered on jumpers.
In the end, it is as Dior as it gets: haute couture traditions and exquisite tailoring, to which Jones adds a big splash of modernity and the flair of Judy Blame. There was a double-zip bomber, which was the most Jones piece of the collection. “You could actually buy two in different colours and play with how you wear them,” he says. Well, mixing and matching Dior bomber jackets is a game only the wealthy can afford to play.At LVMH, it seems budget is unlimited.
As the show started, following the usual celebrity pandemonium, and models exited the backstage, it all took form. The music is loud, the bass powerful, and models with attitude walk with confidence. The final look, a long scintillating black coat acted as the piece de resistance of the collection. It was typical LVMH showmanship, but done with lots of style and poetry, and honestly, we love to see it.
