A nondescript warehouse nestled into Shoreway Commerce Park off East 72nd Street is helping organizations stretch their budgetary dollars that help the community. Judy Payne was inspired by her time at the Kids' Book Bank and couldn't sit still after she retired from that role. Goods Bank NEO is what resulted.

CLEVELAND, Ohio – In a nondescript warehouse nestled into Shoreway Commerce Park off East 72nd Street, Judy Payne is surveying the spatial landscape that supports her new nonprofit,of new products will go – critical items that might otherwise end up in a landfill. Some 90% of all “perfectly good” returned retail products end up in a landfill. It’s a statistic she simply could not abide.

By providing resources for pennies on the dollar, GBNEO helps funders and nonprofits stretch their limited resources and provide marginalized community members with new products that meet basic needs – raising individual dignity and reducing mental stress. “There’s something about providing new, brand-name items to those who need them that destigmatizes that need – and diffuses some of the shame and difficulty surrounding accepting support,” Payne said.

Name-brand merchandise ranges from linens and housewares to office supplies, clothing, toys and more. There’s also a need for baby supplies, toiletries, personal hygiene items, cleaning supplies and other personal effects that GBNEO is able to procure and help distribute to community partners.“When people are receiving new brand-name items – which come from Nike, Ikea, Red Wing and so many other companies – you can see and feel these people lift.

To become a GBNEO member, Payne said that the organization needs to have been a registered 501 for minimum of two years, identify as a school or faith-based organization serving those in need in Cuyahoga, Summit, Portage, Lorain or Lake counties. · Brokering connections to match companies and nonprofits disposing of items with those that need them through GBNEO’s Resource Exchange – an online marketplace where items are offered and claimed, connecting those disposing of items with nonprofits that need them through targeted matches, mass promotion, or off-site pickups;· Giveaways including hygiene items and toys from partnerships like Matthew 25 and Toys for Tots.
