King Charles and Queen Camilla enjoyed a 'royal away day' in Middlesbrough, meeting young fans, celebrating a centenary birthday, and engaging with community groups tackling knife crime.
King Charles and Queen Camilla received adorable Valentine's Day cards from young fans during a 'royal away day' in Middlesbrough. The couple visited the town's International Centre, where they met children participating in a Valentine's Day craft activity. One card read: 'Welcome King Charles, you are the best King ever! I love you so, so much. You are welcomed to Middlesbrough xxx. Love you, from Ruth.' Another card, addressed to Queen Camilla, said: 'I hope you enjoyed your time here.
From Hiyab.' Later, in Central Square, Charles personally presented a special centenary birthday card to Rona Grafton, who turned 100 years old. The visit also included Camilla engaging in a game of table tennis with children and the couple meeting community groups working to reduce local knife crime. The King and Queen arrived at the town's International Centre to the sound of a group from North East Opera singing 'Welcome', a song performed in multiple languages. Camilla, 77, wore a blue wool coat, while the King, 76, opted for a suit and overcoat due to the chilly 5C weather. They met with individuals from The Junction Foundation and Together Middlesbrough and Cleveland organizations, as well as Cleveland Police officers and young people from The King's Trust demonstrating a knife crime education workshop. They also spoke to Middlesbrough Environment City charity workers promoting healthy and sustainable living through community action and events. They were guided by Bini Araia, founder of Investing in People and Culture (IPC), which operates the International Centre and supports refugees and asylum seekers. Additionally, they interacted with representatives from Repod Doctors, an initiative helping medical practitioners who have come to the UK as refugees to transition into the NHS. Inside the centre, Camilla took an impromptu detour and decided to play a game of table tennis with children. She mentioned playing a bit 'in my youth'. Playing with her table-tennis partner, 15-year-old Alesha Hussain, who was celebrating her birthday, Camilla faced 14-year-old Kaleb Autsun. The Queen volleyed the ball across the net, starting a rally with the ball quickly retrieved by helpful watchers whenever anyone missed the table. Alesha, representing a young carers' group and supported by The Junction, shared after the game: ''She was actually good. I was impressed. It's my 15th birthday today so what an amazing way to celebrate it. I don't think there's many people who have done this.' She added: 'She was good, I didn't know she liked table tennis. We just started playing and it was good fun. It's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
