King Charles poses for photos at the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, alongside Camilla the Queen Consort, the German president and first lady for his first state visit as monarch
Preparations for the arrival of King Charles are going on at the Brandenburg Gate in the heart of Berlin, with a military band rehearsing and marching around the square.
This would usually be an area full of tourists taking selfies, but it’s been closed off to the general public for the royal visit and turned into a virtual TV set, with a bank of cameras and photographers waiting for the arrivals.Everything is about capturing the big symbolic moment and a German police van has just pulled up – and getting out were a crack squad with “social media team” on their backs.
The mission of the state visit has been to improve relations with European neighbours - and there are three flags flying over the scene, the German flag, the union flag and the EU flag. The Brandenburg Gate is a symbol of a city reunited after the fall of the Berlin Wall and Germany’s President Steinmeier will soon be here to offer an official welcome.
It’s being claimed as the first time a head of state will have been given an official greeting here, with all the accompanying military honours.
