King Charles III receives a royal salute from members of the military in the gardens of Buckingham Place
For many of us, the 6th May 2023 is the first time we've ever witnessed a monarch's coronation and what a spectacle it was. King Charles III was crowned today at Westminster Abbey in a stunning ceremony, followed by the largest military procession since the Queen's coronation back in 1953. A sea of umbrellas popped up as onlookers tried to gain a good vantage spot to see the return procession from The Mall. Many royal fans climbed on each others shoulders and stood on stalls to try and see over the umbrellas.Earlier crowds broke into cheers as King Charles was crowned. A canon was then fired catching those watching off guard before celebrations continued. The world watched on as Charles becamethe 40th reigning sovereign to be crowned at Westminster Abbey.
Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby placed St Edward’s Crown on Charles' head as the historic moment was a fulfilment of the King’s destiny, but followed the death of his mother, Queen Elizabeth II, last September after a 70-year reign.Read Next:
