King Charles hosted his annual pre-Christmas lunch at Buckingham Palace, with notable attendees like Duchess Sophie. The Prince and Princess of Wales were absent, as they are preparing for Christmas in Norfolk with their children. Prince Andrew also withdrew from the event due to controversy surrounding his business dealings.
King Charles was spotted arriving at Buckingham Palace to host his annual pre-Christmas lunch for the extended Royal Family. Dressed in a suit and blue tie, the 76 year old monarch waved to tourists gathered outside the Palace gates as he was driven there. Sir Clive Alderton, the King's private secretary, was sat beside him in the State Bentley. Also in attendance was Duchess Sophie - Prince Edward's wife - who looked incredibly elegant in a cream coat.
However, the Prince and Princess of Wales were noticeably absent from today's private event. It was revealed earlier today (Thursday, 19 December) that Kate and William will miss the annual Christmas lunch as they are already in Norfolk and are gearing up for the festive period. King Charles has hosted his last two festive gatherings at Windsor Castle, but this year the venue has been moved back to Buckingham Palace - a favourite spot of the late Queen Elizabeth. Today's private lunch will see the monarch invite the wider family, who won't be joining him at the Sandringham estate next week. One noted absence, however, will be Prince Andrew as it was recently announced that he has withdrawn from the event due to the controversy surrounding his association with an alleged Chinese spy, reports the Express. He and his ex-wife Sarah, Duchess of York had been invited to the annual gathering of over 70 royals, but it's understood that the Duchess persuaded Andrew that it would be unwise to attend. This decision will likely come as a relief for King Charles, as his younger brother has once again found himself in the spotlight due to a controversial business relationshi
