On special days, such as anniversaries and birthdays, royal salutes are fired from various locations in London and across the UK.A basic gun salute is 21 rounds, fired at 10 second intervals. If the gun salute is held in Hyde Park or Green Park, however, an extra 20 rounds are fired because it is a Royal Park.
The history of the Accession gun salute can be traced back to 1603 and is the traditional way of marking the accession of a new monarch to the throne.The service is free and all are welcome – there is no need to book. The service will also be streamed online here.This includes the basic 21, a further 20 because the Tower is a Royal Palace, plus another 21 “for the City of London”.
